Lacaille’s Sculptor
Lacaille’s original version of
Sculptor showed the sculptor’s tools (a mallet and two
chisels) on a block of marble next to a table on which rests a
carved bust. Johann Bode did away with the block of marble in
his depiction of the constellation and kept just the bust,
table, and the tools. This illustration comes from a copy of
Lacaille’s map published in the Atlas Céleste of Jean
