Introduced by the Frenchman Pierre-Charles Le Monnier on a star chart published in 1743 in his book La Théorie des Comètes. He called it le Renne, which was shown as “Reene” on the chart. Fittingly, the celestial reindeer was placed near the north pole of the sky. Le Monnier invented the constellation after his trip to Lapland to measure the length of a degree of latitude in the far north. It has also been known by the name Tarandus.
