Sir William Huggins

Huggins stamp Mauritania

Mauritania, 1986

Sir William Huggins (1824–1910) was a pioneer of astronomical spectroscopy who made observations of stars, nebulae, and comets. This stamp, released as part of the Halley’s Comet set from Mauritania, shows Huggins rather incongruously set against a background of an Ariane rocket launching the European probe Giotto to the comet.
