On a Millennium sheet of 18 stamps celebrating highlights from the years 1950 to 2000, Stephen Hawking is pictured against a background of an equation-filled blackboard and the famous Whirlpool spiral galaxy, M51, floating above. The text in the margin of the sheet says: “Stephen Hawking showed that Black Holes emitted radiation and provided equations charting the universe’s expansion from a single point to it’s [sic] current size over fifteen billion years.”

Palau, 2000

A young Hawking, before the crippling effects of his motor neurone disease took hold, is accompanied by a diagram of the geometry of space around a black hole on this stamp from Palau, a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is part of a sheet titled Visionaries of the Twentieth Century. The scan comes from Joachim Reinhardt’s website of physics-related stamps.

Djibouti, 2006

In 2006 the northeast African country of Djibouti produced a series of sheets commemorating great scientists from various eras. The four-pane sheet devoted to the 20th century depicted Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble, and Stephen Hawking.
