Denmark 1944 – Ole Rømer
Ole Rømer (1644–1710) was a Danish astronomer best known for making the first calculation of the
speed of light, which he did in 1676 by comparing the observed time of eclipses
of Jupiter’s satellites with the theoretically predicted times. In 1944, Denmark
commemorated the 300th anniversary of his birth with this stamp.
