Brazil 1890 – Southern Cross
(newspaper stamps)
As their name implies, newspaper stamps
were used for posting newspapers – what we would today
call printed papers rate. This set of three shares the same
Southern Cross theme as the Brazilian letter post stamps of
this era but they are somewhat larger in size. Sugar-loaf
mountain is depicted in the lower part of the stamp beneath the
word “Jornaes”. As with the other stamps of this
era these were evidently hand-perforated and consequently are
somewhat irregular in size.
